Meeting a cultural icon like Batman has to be a real thrill. So why isn’t Mr. Bloom more impressed? Is it because he’s actually Leopold Bloom, protagonist of James Joyce’s Ulysses, and as a literary legend himself, he sneers at pop culture? Or is it because the two are fighting a war in Gotham’s Narrows district? Personally, we favor the former theory, because it would be the best Bat-crossover with a prose hero since the Dark Knight met Sherlock Holmes.
Now that’s not to say this isn’t good, too. It’s Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo—of course it’s good. This issue, everybody’s gambling on the fly, and coming up short. Here’s newly minted Bat-replacement Jim Gordon thinking he’s cornered the seed-based villain in a warehouse, only to find his own power armor turned against him. But Bats bets the farm rather than buys it, and thereby sows Bloom’s downfall:
